English는 고유명사처럼 많이 사용된다. 그래서, 대문자로 쓴다. 그런데, English에 복수형 어미인 -es를 붙인 형태가 있다니! 이건 무슨 의미란 말인가? 영어가 하나가 아닌가?

그렇다. 영어는 한마디로 하나가 아니다. 대표적인 예로, 크게 American English와 British English로 나눌 수 있다. 후자를 '영국 영어, 영국식 영어 혹은 영연방 영어'라고 부른다. 영국, 아일랜드, 오스트레일리아, 뉴질랜드, 남아프리카공화국이 대표적으로 모국어로 영국식 영어를 사용한다. 공용어나 외국어로 사용하는 나라는 과거 영국의 식민지 지배를 받은 홍콩, 말레이시아, 싱가포르, 인도 등이다. 일본 역시 영국식 영어를 사용한다. 북한도 영국식 영어를 가르친다.

 

재미있는 사실은 실제로 영국 영어를 미국 영어보다 더 많은 나라에서 가르치고 공용어로 사용한다는 것이다. 반대로, 미국식 영어를 사용하는 인구의 숫자는 영국식 영어를 사용하는 인구의 숫자보다 많다. 유명한 극작가 버나드 쇼(George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950)은 다음과 같이 말했다.

English(British) and America are two countries divided by a common language.

즉, 영국과 미국은 공통적인 언어인 영어로 나누어진 2개의 나라이다. 

 

불과 수년전만 해도 한국의 학부모와 학원들은 미국식 영어 발음을 구사하는 원어민을 선호한 것이 사실이다. 이승만 대통령이 제 1 차 교육과정 때 미국 영어를 우리나라의 표준영어(Standard English)로 정하면서 줄곧 우리는 미국식 영어를 표준영어로 생각하고 선호도가 높은 편이었다. 하지만 지금은 상황이 달라졌다. 이제는 미국식 영어만을 고집할 수 없다는 것이다. 토플, 토익 시험의 듣기 문제 녹음을 들어보면 확~~ 생각이 달라진다. 성우의 발음이 미국식만 나오는 것이 아니기 때문이다.
